Well thats true but also on a seperate note. The trip to the moon can be looked at as a stop over. This is because supplies and water etv are going to be dropped off by a soyuz or something like that and then the humans will be able to pick up the supplies. THe shuttle and its future model cant hold enough supplies for a six month journey to mars and back. To froman- The mars rover is inspecting what mars is made up of. It will send back information telling us exactly what the surface is made up of, the atmosphere is like etc. You wont need runways to land a space plane. It will sort of float down as ive heard to the surface until it comes to a stop.

so it will be like the lunar module? in that case, its going to need a hell of a lot of reverse thrust to have a soft landing on earth because when it comes through the atmosphere, it will be traveling at some crazy speeds.

Well thatsnot necessarily true because if it can use strong enough parachutes, the reverse thrust wont have to be that much. Also, the descent into the moons atmosphere wont need really any and the descent into the martian atmosphere will need very little also so it makes up for the earth descent
